Museu Da Mare

Spring of 2017, SIPS funded Katherine De Araujo and her Museu da Maré project. Katherine worked with the community museum Museu da Maré in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil while on her study abroad program. This community museum showcases the history of Maré, a favela complex in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro. In the city of Rio, close to 1.5 million people live in favelas, which are underserved communities containing both welfare challenges and incredible community organizing and strength. Museu da Maré seeks to educate both their community and outsiders on the culture and issues the Maré community faces.

Katherine worked with ith Museu da Maré staff to identify key areas in which the museum’s impact and reach can be furthered. Katherine designed the layout for a website that contains information about the museum in Portuguese, Spanish, French, and English. The website has information on the museum’s history, exhibitions, contact information, visiting hours, and location. She also translated booklets for international visitors to follow along with during the tour guide’s presentation of the exhibition in Portuguese.
