Beehive Initiative

In 2017, this project introduced beehives to Georgetown’s campus in order to promote sustainable food growth. Austin Hong (C’18) Angela Bai (C’17) founded the Beehive Initiative as a way for students to learn about beekeeping and consider the cycles of sustainable food production. Hong and Bai used their SIPS funding to purchase a small colony of Western honey bees and aim to sell the honey they harvest at Georgetown’s farmers market. The project was also advised by Prof. Edward Barrows of the Department of Biology, who has expertise in the study of bees.
