Orenda Project 

Receiving SIPS funding in 2015, Ahwaz Akhtar (SFS ’16) and Haroon Yasin (SFS-15) founded Orenda Project, an educational startup aimed at bringing education to children in Afghan basti in Islamabad, Pakistan. In addition to the creation of a physical school, the project includes development of an innovative online learning platform in order to best reach students living in poverty. The curriculum included cartoons designed to to keep students engaged and interested in their studies, and could be downloaded onto parents’ phones for convenience. The program has successfully fostered improvement in student academic performance, teaching across traditional subjects including English, science, and math, as well as electives covering topics such as health, hygiene, and entrepreneurship skills.
