Role of Black Queer Women in South African Student Movements
In 2016, Khadija Khan (C’17) received funding to connect with women who were activists in the #Feesmustfall movement and create a documentary about their experiences. Khan travelled to Cape Town, South Africa in order to research the role of Black Queer women in the student-led movement Fees Must Fall, which protested increases in student fees at local universities and advocated for greater government funding allocations for university education. Khan found that “it was mostly black queer women leading the movement, which is largely hidden.”
